Tell us about yourself.

My name is Hama, I am a triathlete from Senegal, based in the Uk and cookies are my Kryptonite.

What do you love about cycling

It’s going to sound very cliché, but the sense of freedom you get from being able to go anywhere or cover big distances just thanks to your own strength.

There’s also the community. It brings people from all sorts of backgrounds together. Being able to share this with others, whether it’s a chilled coffee ride, a race or a training ride where you’re pushing each other, it usually is quite fun, good laughs and lovely memories.

What barriers have you faced in cycling

First of all it was about trying to figure out which bike and equipment I need. Then one of the main challenges was the cost. Good gear can get quite expensive.

Why were you interested in contributing?

The more diverse voices can be heard the better, as representation and people being able to identify and relate to others is super important for getting more people into the sport.

If you're comfortable, tell us about your personal experience of diversity in cycling

In triathlon, it was always a funny feeling turning up to races and being the only black person there. Nothing that’s bothering me anyway, but it’s hard not to notice, and then doing well can be surprising to some people, which is always funny.

Your fondest memory on the bike

One of my fondest memories was going out for a 300km ride around Kent. It was a long day in the saddle and really hard work, but the emotions I felt throughout were ineffable.
