Community Spotlight: Metro Atlanta Cycling Club

Welcome to our community spotlight series, where we share the stories of communities and their members so that you, our readers, can find groups to be a part of, no matter where you are in the world.

Today, we sit down with Eufemia D'Amour, the Vice President of Metro Atlanta Cycling Club, the group dedicated to promoting cycling and diversity in the Metro Atlanta area, including putting on the One Love Century.

Tell us about Metro Atlanta Cycling Club (MACC)

MACC men and women can be easily spotted among the colorful jerseys of the peloton.  Yellow, Red, Black, and Green are the colors found on MACC’s club jersey, which also displays the legendary black 1899 Word Champion cyclist, Major Taylor. Additional symbols found on the jerseys are typically mountain summits and the important symbol of unity amongst humanity “funtuntunefu-denkyemfunefu”. These Pan-African colors combined with the “Leader of the Tour” jersey color (the pinnacle of cycling) and the selected symbols provide a visual presentation of MACC’s heart and soul. One Love!

Where are you based and where do you serve?

Both the club and the race team are based out of Atlanta, Georgia serving cyclist across the state of Georgia. We have cyclist from the metro area and as far as Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina and Florida that regularly come to ride with us.

What sort of riders are part of your community?

Our community consist largely of traditional road cyclists.

Our mission: “To promote cycling in the black community and to build camaraderie among all cyclists.”

To do so, we grow riders from very new to advanced racers. We have the Beginner Ride geared towards new cyclist that can travel just a few miles and may not yet know the basics of cycling. Likewise, we also have Thursday Tango, a training ride, for stronger cyclists and those that are actively racing.

In between, we have ride options that train our cyclists in the directions that they wish to go. Our routes can be ridden by all, but we provide A and B groups so that no one is left behind.

There are no rules about the type of bike that someone rides, but it is a mandatory that a helmet is worn!

Do you target any specific groups?

MACC targets individuals that are serious about cycling and not afraid of the open road. Our youngest cyclist may be as young as 10 with the oldest in their 80s. All groups/ages are welcome and individually our members ride various disciplines (road, track, gravel, mountain, and cyclocross).

Tell us about your community activities:

The club rides every Tuesday evening for Tuesday TapOut, a spirited 28 mile ride. Thursday Training ride affectionately called Tuesday Tango. In addition to the standard weekly rides, every first Saturday we have a beginner ride and every third Sunday we have a club ride.

Our annual and most beloved event is the One Love Century that takes place every Labor Day weekend. A cyclist’s homecoming, it is five days of cycling and fellowship.

I'd love to hear how your community came to be, the founder's story:

Our Rich History

The Metro Atlanta Cycling Club (MACC) began in the mid 80’s out of the now-defunct Yellow Jersey Bicycle Shop in South Dekalb. The Yellow Jersey Bicycle Shop opened its doors not only to serve the cycling community but also to bring awareness of the sport to the black community.
